وزارت دفاع بریتانیا اعلام کرد که یک پایگاه نیروی هوایی سلطنتی این کشور در قبرس،‌ شب یکشنبه هدف «یک حمله احتمالی پهپادی» قرار گرفته است.

این وزارتخانه افزود که نیروهای مسلح در پایگاه اکروتیری،‌ حوالی نیمه شب به وقت محلی به این حمله واکنش نشان دادند. در این حمله مشکوک هیچ تلفات جانی گزارش نشده است.

وزارت دفاع بریتانیا می‌گوید که سطح حفاظت نیروها در این منطقه در «بالاترین» حد است و پایگاه برای «دفاع از پرسنل خود واکنش نشان داده» است.

این اتفاق در حالی رخ داده است که پس از کشته شدن علی خامنه‌ای در حملات هوایی آمریکا و اسرائیل،‌ جان هیلی،‌ وزیر دفاع بریتانیا، گفته است که نیروهای بریتانیایی و غیرنظامیان در خاورمیانه در معرض «حملات بی‌هدف» ایران قرار دارند.
