ترامپ در گفت‌وگویی تلفنی با رسانه «تایمز اسرائیل» از اظهار نظر درباره این انتصاب خودداری کرد و در پاسخ به پرسشی درباره انتخاب مجتبی خامنه‌ای تنها گفت: «خواهیم دید چه اتفاقی می‌افتد.»

این اظهارات پس از آن مطرح شد که رسانه‌های حکومتی در ایران اعلام کردند مجلس خبرگان رهبری مجتبی خامنه‌ای، پسر علی خامنه‌ای، را به‌عنوان رهبر جدید جمهوری اسلامی انتخاب کرده است.

رئیس‌جمهور آمریکا ساعاتی پیش از این مصاحبه نیز در گفت‌وگویی با شبکه ای‌بی‌سی نیوز درباره رهبر بعدی ایران هشدار داده بود که اگر رهبر جدید جمهوری اسلامی تأیید کاخ سفید را نداشته باشد «زیاد دوام نخواهد آورد».

وزارت دفاع ترکیه اعلام کرد این کشور شش جنگنده اف-۱۶ و سامانه‌های پدافند هوایی را برای تقویت امنیت جامعه ترک‌تبار به قبرس شمالی اعزام کرده است.

به گفته این وزارتخانه، این اقدام در پی افزایش تنش‌های منطقه‌ای و همزمان با جنگ در منطقه انجام شده و آنکارا در صورت لزوم اقدامات بیشتری نیز انجام خواهد داد.

در روزهای اخیر برخی کشورهای اروپایی نیز حضور نظامی خود در جزیره قبرس را افزایش داده‌اند. این تحولات پس از آن رخ داد که هفته گذشته یک پهپاد جمهوری اسلامی، که مقام‌های امنیتی احتمال می‌دهند از سوی حزب‌الله لبنان شلیک شده باشد، به پایگاه هوایی آکروتیری بریتانیا در قبرس اصابت کرد.
